Blog Posts Are Like Annuities

by Joe on December 16, 2009

financeI went to a social media breakfast hosted by the Burlington Social Media Club this morning, and the speaker was a man named Rick Burnes from HubSpot, the Inbound Marketing firm.

Rick used a terrific analogy to describe the importance of blogging: He compared it to an annuity.

Blogs Deliver Value on a Continuing Basis

When you write a blog post, your website gains a page that gets indexed on the major search engines like Google, creating an opportunity for you to attract new visitors and ‘inbound’ leads over and over. Annuities operate the same in that they require an initial investment, then provide continuing revenue. You invest time creating a blog post, then receive ongoing value when people find your site online as a result of this content.

Last point: consider how smart your blog ‘investment’ is.

  1. How are you optimizing your content for search?
  2. How many links are you gaining to your valuable content?
  3. Have you made the decision to focus on one topic at a time?
