Social Media Strategy and Tactics

strategy-and-tacticsSocial media is getting out of control.

Businesses and individuals often think ‘social media’ means the same thing as spamming people with self-centered messages. I’ve got news for you: social media is a communication and distribution tool, like a telephone or a letter.

Think of the social Web like a public swimming pool. It’s something we all use, so treat it nicely lest it become too polluted for anyone. That means sharing relevant information and just speaking in your own voice. Here are some strategies and tactics for cutting through the noise.

Strategies:

  • Choose a target audience
  • Decide on the best sites to distribute content
  • Map out a list of advocates you should connect with

Tactics:

  • Share hyper-relevant links and stories to enhance your reputation
  • Provide something of value – free
  • Write ‘link bait’ posts to stoke the interest of potential blog partners

Then again, spamming the hell out of people can be profitable. All you need to do is violate a hundred different laws, gain access to some nefarious spam bots, create an offshore bank account, and …

On second thought, just don’t pee in the social media pool.
